Greek Chicken Gyro-Style Smashed Tacos with Homemade Tzatziki

I made these Greek Chicken Gyro-Style Smashed Tacos for dinner tonight, and they were so good that there wasn’t a single one left.

I love a dinner that feels a little different but is still incredibly easy to get on the table. These are somewhere between a smashed taco and a chicken gyro—ground chicken is seasoned, pressed in a thin layer directly onto a flour tortilla, and cooked chicken-side down until browned. Flip it for another minute to lightly toast the tortilla, then pile everything with cool tzatziki, fresh cucumber, tomato, and red onion.

They’re fresh, filling, and really easy to customize. And if you’re feeding hungry teenagers like I am, this is also a recipe that’s very easy to double!

Doubling the Recipe for a Hungry Family

If you’re feeding a bigger family—or teenagers!—I would absolutely double this recipe. It made 18 tacos, and my family finished every single one.

For the batch I made, I used:

  • 2 pounds ground chicken
  • About 2-3 tablespoons homemade Greek seasoning
  • 18 small flour tortillas
  • Extra cucumber, tomato and red onion
  • Plenty of tzatziki

One thing I love about this recipe is that you don’t have to be overly precise with the seasoning.

A Few Easy Shortcuts

This is already a quick dinner, but there are a few ways to make it even easier on a busy night. Use store-bought tzatziki, slice the vegetables earlier in the day, and mix the chicken with the seasoning ahead of time so all you have to do at dinner is assemble and cook. To make more tacos at once, I recommend using a large griddle or or flat top cooking surface over your burners so you can cook several at a time, instead of working one at a time.

You can also set out the cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta and tzatziki separately and let everyone build their own tacos.

What to Serve with Greek Chicken Smashed Tacos

Honestly, these are filling enough to serve on their own, especially when everyone is grabbing two or three.

If you want to make them into a larger meal, serve them with a simple Greek salad, lemon roasted potatoes, rice, roasted vegetables, or fresh fruit.

Ingredients

Homemade Greek Seasoning
  • 1 tbs dried oregano
  • 1 tbs dried basil
  • 1 tbs dried parsley
  • 1 tsp dried dill
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
Greek Chick Tacos
  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 1 tbs homemade greek seasoning, or more to taste
  • 6-9 small flour tortillas
  • 1 tbs olive oil, as needed for the pan
Toppings
  • 1 cucumber, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 tomatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 small red onion, very thinly sliced
  • tzatziki sauce, homemade or store bought
  • crumbled feta cheese, optional
Homemade Tzatziki Sauce
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup shredded cucumber, squeezed and drained of water
  • 1 tbs fresh dill, finely chopped
  • 1 small garlic clove, finely minced or grated
  • kosher salt to taste

Equipment

  • large griddle or nonstick skillet
  • Mixing bowl
  • spatula
  • Cutting Board
  • sharp knife
  • box grater
  • mandolin slicer

Method

Make the Tzatziki:
  1. Finely shred the cucumber and place it in a clean kitchen towel or several layers of paper towels. Squeeze out as much excess moisture as possible.
  2. Add the cucumber to a small bowl with the Greek yogurt, fresh dill, garlic and salt. Stir everything together until well combined. Cover and refrigerate until you’re ready to serve.
Prepare Greek Seasoning:
  1. In a bowl, add all ingredients and mix together until combined. Set aside.
  2. Any leftover seasoning store in an airtight container.
Make the Greek Chicken Tacos:
  1. Place the ground chicken in a bowl and add the Greek Seasoning. Gently mix with your hands until the seasoning is evenly distributed throughout the chicken.
  2. Lay the tortillas on a clean work surface.
  3. Take a small portion of the seasoned ground chicken and spread it directly onto one side of each tortilla. Press the chicken into a very thin, even layer, spreading it almost all the way to the edges.
  4. Heat a large nonstick skillet or griddle over medium-high heat and lightly coat it with olive oil.
  5. Place the tortillas chicken-side down onto the hot cooking surface.
  6. Cook for about 3–4 minutes without moving them, until the chicken is browned and completely cooked through. Ground chicken should reach an internal temperature of 165°F.
  7. Flip the tortillas and cook for another minute, just until the tortilla is warmed and lightly toasted.
  8. Remove from the pan and repeat with the remaining tacos.
Layer on the Toppings:
  1. Spread tzatziki over the cooked chicken and then layer on the sliced cucumber, tomato and red onion.
  2. Add a little crumbled feta if you like, although they’re delicious without it.
  3. Serve immediately while the chicken and tortilla are warm and the vegetables are still cool and crisp.
An Easy Dinner To Make Again

This is one of those dinners that will immediately go into the meal rotation, considering 18 tacos disappeared at my dinner table with no leftovers! These tacos have all those fresh gyro flavors, but the smashed-taco method makes them incredibly easy for a weeknight.

Warm seasoned chicken, a lightly toasted tortilla, creamy tzatziki and those crisp, fresh vegetables are such a good combination.
