These creamy homemade chocolate fudge pops are rich, nostalgic and made with simple, real ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.

There are certain summer treats that instantly transport you back to childhood, and for me, fudge pops are one of them. I can still remember eating a cold fudge pop after swimming at the neighbor’s pool or spending a day at the beach. My mom would pull them from the freezer, and all of us kids would sit on our beach towels in the driveway, drying off and enjoying every creamy, chocolatey bite. Those simple summer memories inspired me to recreate that same rich chocolate flavor—but with real ingredients I could feel good about serving my own family.

Getting there took a lot more testing than I expected. I made batch after batch, adjusting one ingredient at a time until I found the perfect balance of rich chocolate flavor, creamy texture, and simple pantry ingredients. The result is a homemade fudge pop that’s incredibly chocolatey, wonderfully creamy, and about as close as you can get to the classic frozen treat—without all the preservatives, gums, artificial flavors, and unnecessary additives.

They’re so good that I find myself licking the pan clean every single time I make them. If you’re looking for an easy homemade frozen dessert that tastes like summer, I think you’re going to love these.

Why You’ll Love These Homemade Fudge Pops

  • Rich chocolate flavor
  • Creamy texture
  • Made with pantry staples
  • No artificial ingredients
  • Higher in protein than traditional fudge pops
  • Kid-approved and adult-approved
  • Easy to make ahead

The Secret to Creamy Homemade Fudge Pops

Many homemade fudge pop recipes turn icy because they’re mostly milk and cocoa. After lots of testing, I found that combining several ingredients creates a much smoother texture. The result is a homemade fudge pop that tastes surprisingly close to the classic frozen treats many of us grew up enjoying.

Heavy cream provides richness and creaminess.

Whole milk powder increases the milk solids without adding extra water, making the pops creamier.

Cornstarch lightly thickens the mixture before freezing, helping reduce ice crystal formation.

Sweetened condensed milk was the final ingredient that brought everything together. It adds concentrated milk solids and just enough sweetness to create an even creamier bite.

Why I Use Fairlife Chocolate Milk

One ingredient that really made a difference during recipe testing was Fairlife Chocolate Milk. I love using it because it naturally has:

  • more protein
  • less sugar than many chocolate milks
  • lactose free making it easier for digestion
  • a richer chocolate flavor
  • a creamier texture

The extra protein helps create a richer frozen pop while boosting the nutrition a little. Don’t have Fairlife? No problem. You can substitute whole chocolate milk, 2% chocolate milk, or plain whole or 2% milk if you prefer. If using plain milk, simply increase the cocoa powder slightly to boost the chocolate flavor.

Storage

Store frozen in the molds or transfer to a freezer-safe container with parchment paper between layers. Best enjoyed within 2 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use regular milk? Absolutely. Whole milk will give the richest texture, but 2% milk also works well. If using plain milk instead of chocolate milk, simply increase the cocoa powder slightly to maintain the rich chocolate flavor.

Why do I need to cook the mixture for one minute after it starts bubbling? Cornstarch needs to cook completely to activate its thickening power. Giving it one additional minute helps create a smoother, creamier fudge pop without any starchy flavor.

Why use whole milk powder? It boosts milk solids without adding extra liquid, helping reduce iciness and create a richer, creamier pop.

Why add sweetened condensed milk? Sweetened condensed milk contains concentrated milk solids and sugar, both of which help reduce ice crystal formation while adding richness and a smoother texture.

Can I use honey or maple syrup? Yes. Honey adds a mild floral flavor, while maple syrup creates a deeper caramel note. I prefer light agave because it lets the chocolate shine.

Why do you add the vanilla and sweetened condensed milk after cooking instead of before? Adding the vanilla and sweetened condensed milk after removing the saucepan from the heat gives the best flavor and texture. Vanilla is delicate, and prolonged cooking can cause some of its flavor and aroma to cook off. Stirring it in after the mixture is finished cooking preserves its rich, warm flavor.

Sweetened condensed milk doesn’t need to be cooked because it’s already concentrated and fully processed. Adding it off the heat helps maintain its creamy texture and fresh dairy flavor while blending smoothly into the warm chocolate mixture.

Why do you place plastic wrap directly on the surface while the mixture cools? Placing plastic wrap directly against the surface of the warm fudge pop mixture prevents a thick “skin” from forming as it cools. That skin is simply dried proteins and starch from the milk and cornstarch, but if it gets stirred back in, it can leave small lumps and affect the smooth, creamy texture.

For the best results, press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the mixture while it’s still warm, making sure there are no air pockets. Once the mixture has cooled completely in the refrigerator, remove the plastic wrap, give it a quick whisk, and spoon it into your popsicle molds.

Pro Tip: This simple step helps ensure your homemade fudge pops freeze with the silky, creamy texture you’re looking for.

Notes

Tips for the Creamiest Homemade Fudge Pops
  • Whisk constantly while cooking.
  • Cooking for the additional minute after the gentle bubbles fully cooks the cornstarch so your pops have the smoothest, creamiest texture possible without any starchy taste.
  • Adding the vanilla and sweetened condensed milk after cooking preserves its flavor instead of cooking it away.
  • Chill the mixture completely before freezing.
  • Cover the surface with plastic wrap while cooling to prevent a skin from forming.
  • Give the chilled mixture one final whisk before pouring into the molds.
  • Freeze overnight for the best texture.

Shop the Products I Used

I used these silicone popsicle molds for this recipe. Its a 10 pop mold and each cavity holds almost 4 ounces, creating a generously sized fudge pop that releases easily.

I also purchased popsicle sticks that come in 3 different sizes, and 200 sticks to a bag.
