There is just something special about homemade ice cream on a warm summer evening. It’s one of those simple traditions that brings everyone into the kitchen, whether you’re making classic vanilla, fresh peach from the farmers market, or letting the kids create their own favorite flavor.
For our family, homemade ice cream has become more than just a fun summer treat. Our son has a food allergy, which makes buying ice cream more challenging than simply grabbing a carton from the grocery store. Cross-contamination, shared manufacturing equipment, and changing ingredient labels mean we’re always reading packages carefully. Making ice cream at home allows us to control every ingredient, reduce allergen exposure, and create desserts we can all enjoy with confidence.
Another reason we love making our own ice cream is that we can use simple, wholesome ingredients. Instead of relying on artificial flavors and long ingredient lists, we build our recipes around whole milk, Greek yogurt, fresh fruit, local honey or pure maple syrup, cocoa powder, vanilla, and other real foods.

We make all of our ice cream using our Ninja Creami, and it has quickly become one of our favorite kitchen appliances. It’s incredibly easy to use, and one of the things I love most is that our kids can make their own desserts. Once the pint is frozen, they simply place it in the machine, choose the correct setting, and customize it with their favorite mix-ins like chocolate chips, fresh berries, or brownie pieces.

The Secret to Creamy Homemade Ice Cream with Real Ingredients
If you’ve ever wondered why some homemade ice cream tastes icy while others are rich and creamy? The answer is usually the fat content. We love the taste and texture of premium ice cream, so we’ve found a simple balance that works beautifully.
Rather than making our recipes overly rich, we add just ⅓ to ½ cup of heavy cream per Ninja Creami pint. Combined with whole milk, Greek yogurt, fresh fruit, honey, and maple syrup, it creates a smooth, scoopable texture that feels indulgent without being overly heavy.

The result is homemade ice cream that tastes like a premium dessert while still relying on simple, recognizable ingredients—exactly the kind of approachable, wholesome recipes we love to share here at Living Layered.
Whether you’re looking for healthier dessert options, navigating food allergies, or simply wanting to enjoy more homemade treats with your family, these recipes have become some of our favorite ways to celebrate summer.

Tips for the Creamiest Homemade Ice Cream
- Freeze each pint on a completely level surface for at least 24 hours.
- Let the pint sit on the counter for 10 minutes before spinning.
- If your ice cream looks crumbly after the first spin, add 1 tablespoon of whole milk and use the Re-Spin function.
- Use ripe, in-season fruit whenever possible for the best natural sweetness.
- Taste the ice cream base before freezing and adjust the honey or maple syrup to your liking. If needed, you can always add a little more sweetener after spinning and use the Re-Spin function to blend it in.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make these recipes ahead of time? Absolutely! Keep several frozen pints in your freezer so there’s always a homemade dessert ready to spin.
Why do these recipes use a little heavy cream? Adding just ⅓ to ½ cup of heavy cream creates a rich, premium ice cream texture while still keeping the recipes focused on wholesome, everyday ingredients.
Can I make these recipes without heavy cream? – Yes! If you’d rather skip the heavy cream, you can substitute whole milk Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, or additional whole milk. Greek yogurt creates a creamy, slightly tangy texture that’s perfect for frozen yogurt-style recipes, while blended cottage cheese adds extra creaminess without changing the flavor. Whole milk is another great option if you’re looking for a lighter dessert. Keep in mind that the ice cream won’t have quite the same rich, premium texture as recipes made with a small amount of heavy cream. That’s why I use just ⅓ to ½ cup per pint—it creates a luxuriously creamy texture while still keeping the recipes focused on simple, wholesome ingredients. If you’re looking for the closest texture to premium ice cream, I recommend including the heavy cream.
Can I use frozen fruit instead of fresh? Yes! Frozen fruit works wonderfully in these recipes and is a great way to enjoy homemade ice cream year-round. If using frozen fruit, thaw it completely before blending so it mixes smoothly with the other ingredients. It’s also a great way to use fruit you’ve preserved at home.
