A Weekend in Lucerne, Switzerland

Relaxing, serene, and one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever visited.

There’s something about Lake Lucerne that immediately slows life down. The clear blue water, snow-capped mountains in the distance, charming lakeside villages, and the peaceful rhythm of ferries moving across the lake, make this part of Switzerland feel almost unreal.

So we had to check out the area while we were living in Europe, and we spent the most incredible weekend, ferrying to spots along the lake, shopping in the city, exploring historic landmarks, and of course, eating fondue.

Staying in Weggis on Lake Lucerne

We found a wonderful place to stay stayed in Weggis, a beautiful little town sitting directly on Lake Lucerne, called Seehof du Lac. The hotel Seehof du Lac has been welcoming travelers for generations and is known for its incredible waterfront location and classic Swiss charm. This hotel became the perfect home base for all our adventures around the lake.

It was so nice to wake up in the mornings and look out the windows and see the surrounding mountains, or sit out on our balcony in the evenings after our long days walking and listen to the water on the lake.

One of our favorite memories at Seehof du Lac was eating dinner right at the hotel restaurant overlooking the water. Watching the sun reflect off the lake while enjoying traditional Swiss food made for one of those moments you wish you could bottle up forever.

The area in Weggis was easy to get to by car, and ferry, and provided a lot of activities for adults and families to enjoy, an office where you could book tours easily, restaurants, shopping and evening entertainment.

Exploring Lake Lucerne by Ferry

One of the best parts about staying in Weggis was how easy it was to explore the entire lake region by ferry. The ferry system around Lake Lucerne is incredible — scenic, relaxing, and honestly one of the best ways to experience the area. They actually became part of the experience itself. Some of the ferries are historic paddle steamers, which makes the experience feel even more charming and timeless.

You can purchase single route tickets or day passes that allow unlimited travel around the lake, making it perfect for spending the day discovering different towns like Vitznau and Burgenstock, and mountain excursions. Honestly, sitting on the upper deck with the cool mountain air, watching the swans drift across the lake while the villages passed by was honestly one of my favorite parts of the trip.

Places Around the Lake Worth Exploring

Weggis

Weggis quickly became one of my favorite Swiss towns. It’s peaceful, picturesque, and filled with lakeside walking paths and beautiful hotels. The palm trees mixed with mountain views almost make it feel Mediterranean in certain spots. Weggis is also known for being a wellness destination where people come to slow down, relax and unwind – its all part of the lifestyle here.

Vitznau

Just down the lake from Weggis, Vitznau is another charming village known for its mountain railway access and stunning waterfront scenery. Its quieter and more relaxed than Lucerne. Here you can take the historic cogwheel railway that climbs up Mount Rigi. Once at the top, there are hiking trails, restaurants, look out points and endless Swiss Alp scenery. This region is also known for wellness hotels, mineral baths and spas.

Bürgenstock

Bürgenstock feels luxurious and dramatic, like something out of a movie, perched high above the lake with breathtaking panoramic views. The cliffside Hammetschwand Lift — Europe’s highest outdoor elevator — offers incredible views over Lake Lucerne. The glass elevator climbs dramatically up the cliffside and takes you to a panoramic lookout points with spectacular views of Lake Lucerne. The combination of mountains, lake water, forests, and clouds rolling through the peaks of Burgenstock make it feel absolutely surreal.

Lucerne

Lucerne itself is full of history and charm. The city dates back to the medieval period and became an important trade route through the Swiss Alps.

Today it blends historic architecture with beautiful waterfront scenery and vibrant culture.

Walking on the cobblestone pathways of the historic town square, and seeing all the colorful buildings, and fresco painted facades, makes you feel like you are stepping back in time.

Lucerne sits directly on Lake Lucerne and is known for its waterfront promenade and stunning crystal-clear water filled with swans. These swans have become part of Lucerne’s charm and identity. They add such a magical feeling to the city.

Besides walking along the historic streets shopping for luxury Swiss watches and chocolates, you will find The Chapel Bridge – one of Lucerne’s most iconic landmarks and one of the oldest covered wooden bridges in Europe.

Lined with flowers in warmer months, the bridge stretches across the Reuss River and connects the Old Town to the waterfront. Inside the bridge are historic painted panels that tell stories from the cities history.

And don’t forget to stop and see the Lion Monument – one of the most moving landmarks in Lucerne. Its a massive lion carved directly into a rock cliff. It was created to honor the Swiss Guards who lost their lives during the French Revolution in 1792. The dying lion symbolizes bravery, sacrifice and loyalty, and the emotion carved into the sculpture is incredibly powerful in person.

Another stop in town is the Musegg Wall and tower. Its part of Lucerne’s original medieval fortifications. Several towers are still open to visitors and offer panoramic views over the city, lake, and mountains.

After a day of exploring Lucerne, sitting down for a warm meal feels like the perfect ending. Its also a perfect way to try traditional Swiss food – Cheese fondue, raclette, which are cheesy potatoes, and rosti which are crispy golden potatoes like hashbrowns. And don’t forget about dessert – swiss chocolate or chocolate fondue. The best place to try all these is at the Fondue House Du Pont, located right on the river in Old Town. They even have outdoor seating near the water that makes the meal especially memorable.

Hiking Mount Pilatus

Another highlights of the trip could be heading up Mount Pilatus. The views from the mountain are absolutely breathtaking. Standing above the clouds looking out over Lake Lucerne and the surrounding Alps is something you’ll never forget. The area offers hiking trails for every level, scenic lookout points, mountain restaurants, and adventure activities that make it fun for families as well.

And of course — there are the rodelbahns.

The alpine coaster rides on Mt. Pilatus are the most famous, and known as the longest summer toboggan run in Switzerland. Flying down the mountain through tunnels, curves and jumps will give the entire trip this perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. Switzerland somehow manages to feel peaceful and exciting at the same time.

Why This Trip Meant So Much

What I loved most about this weekend in Lucerne was how it allowed us to slow down and simply enjoy where we were. No rushing. No packed itinerary.

Just exploring beautiful places together, eating incredible food, and taking in views that didn’t even feel real.

Switzerland has a way of making you feel small in the best possible way — surrounded by mountains, history, nature, and beauty everywhere you turn.

Lake Lucerne will always be one of those places I hope to return to someday.
