My Skin Routine at 50: What’s Working for Me

Turning 50 has completely changed the way I think about skincare — it’s about consistency, hydration, healthy habits, and taking care of my skin in a way that makes me feel confident and healthy in every season.

Over the years, I’ve learned that aging skin needs support, nourishment, and gentle maintenance. These are the products and habits that have made the biggest difference for me.

Starting with Body Care

One of the biggest changes I made was becoming more intentional about caring for the skin on my body — not just my face.

I love using a turmeric, kojic acid, and tea tree body wash because it helps brighten dull skin and improve uneven tone. Turmeric is known for its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, while kojic acid is commonly used to help fade discoloration and dark spots over time.

As we age, skin can start looking dull or uneven, especially after years of sun exposure, so I’ve found this combination really helps keep my skin looking brighter and smoother.

I also use a shower moisturizer daily to help lock in hydration before my skin has a chance to dry out. Mature skin tends to lose moisture more quickly, and using a moisturizer right in the shower has helped keep my skin feeling softer, smoother, and more hydrated throughout the day.

Products I Love:

Exfoliating with Glycolic Acid

A few times a week, I use glycolic acid to exfoliate.

As we get older, skin cell turnover naturally slows down, which can leave skin looking dry, rough, or tired. Glycolic acid helps remove dead skin cells and encourages fresh, glowing skin underneath.

I’ve noticed it helps:

  • Smooth rough texture
  • Brighten my complexion
  • Improve product absorption
  • Give my skin a healthier glow

The key is not overdoing it. Gentle consistency works better than harsh treatments.

Product I Use:

Vitamin C Every Morning

Vitamin C has become one of my favorite morning skincare products.

I use it daily because it helps:

  • Brighten skin
  • Support collagen production
  • Protect against environmental stressors
  • Improve uneven skin tone

It gives my skin a fresher, healthier look and layers beautifully under moisturizer and sunscreen.

Product I Use:

Sunscreen Every Single Day

One of the most important things I do for my skin is wear SPF 50 sunscreen every single day — even when it’s cloudy or I’m mostly indoors.

If there’s one skincare habit I wish I had started earlier, it would be daily sunscreen.

Sun exposure is one of the biggest causes of:

  • Premature aging
  • Dark spots
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Loss of firmness
  • Uneven skin tone

Using SPF consistently helps protect all the work I’m putting into my skincare routine and keeps my skin healthier long term.

At 50, I’ve learned that protecting your skin is just as important as treating it.

Product I Use:

Niacinamide at Night

In the evenings, I use niacinamide as part of my nighttime routine.

This ingredient has been amazing for helping calm and balance my skin while improving texture and tone. I especially love it because it supports the skin barrier, which becomes even more important as skin matures.

Some of the benefits I’ve personally noticed:

  • Smoother skin texture
  • Reduced redness
  • Better hydration
  • More even-looking skin

Product I Use:

Bakuchiol Oil for Firmness & Fine Lines

One product I’ve really grown to love is bakuchiol oil.

Bakuchiol is often called a gentler alternative to retinol. I like it because it helps improve the appearance of wrinkles and firmness without making my skin irritated or overly dry.

At this stage in life, I’m focusing more on healthy, nourished skin instead of aggressive treatments — and bakuchiol fits perfectly into that mindset.

Product I Use:

Overnight Collagen Masks

One skincare ritual I genuinely look forward to is using collagen overnight masks once or twice a week.

These masks leave my skin feeling deeply hydrated, plump, and refreshed by morning. As skin matures, maintaining moisture becomes incredibly important, and I’ve found these overnight treatments help give my skin an extra boost when it’s feeling dry or tired.

After using them, my skin feels:

  • Softer
  • More hydrated
  • Smoother
  • More radiant

It’s one of those small self-care moments that makes a big difference.

Product I Use:

Targeting Dark Spots

Years of sun exposure eventually show up on your skin, especially in your 40s and 50s.

To help with discoloration and dark spots, I use alpha arbutin. It’s become one of my favorite brightening products because it helps improve uneven pigmentation without being harsh.

Over time, I’ve noticed my skin tone looks more balanced and radiant.

Product I Use:

Frownies for Forehead Lines

One of the more unexpected things I’ve added to my routine is Frownies for my forehead.

They work by helping relax facial tension overnight and keeping the skin smooth while you sleep. I originally tried them for deeper forehead lines and was surprised by how much softer my expression lines looked over time.

They’re now a regular part of my nighttime routine.

Product I Use:

Gua Sha & Roller for Lymphatic Drainage

I also try to spend a few minutes at night using a gua sha to help with lymphatic drainage and facial tension. In the mornings I use the roller to help reduce puffiness and press in my serums.

This has become one of my favorite self-care rituals because it helps:

  • Reduce puffiness
  • Encourage circulation
  • Relax facial muscles
  • Give the skin a more lifted appearance

It’s a small habit that makes a big difference, especially in the mornings.

Product I Use:

Water, Collagen & Vitamins

No skincare routine works well without taking care of your body from the inside out.

Drinking Water

Hydration is one of the most important things for healthy skin. I try to drink plenty of water every day because dehydrated skin tends to look dull, tired, and more textured.

Liquid Collagen

I also take liquid collagen regularly.

As we age, natural collagen production declines, which can contribute to:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Loss of elasticity
  • Thinner skin
  • Joint discomfort
  • Brittle hair and nails

Collagen supplements may help support skin elasticity, hydration, and overall skin health while also supporting hair, nails, and joints.

For me, it’s become part of my overall wellness routine — not just skincare.

Vitamins

I also focus on taking vitamins that support overall health and skin wellness. Healthy skin often reflects what’s happening internally, and I’ve found that taking care of my body overall makes the biggest difference.

Products I Use:

Aging Is Not About Perfection

At 50, I’m not trying to look 25 again — and honestly, I don’t want to.

I want healthy skin.
Glowing skin.
Confident skin.

I’ve learned that aging beautifully is more about consistency and self-care than perfection. Small daily habits really do add up over time.

And maybe the most important lesson of all:

You’re not starting over — you’re building layers.
