My Neck Surgery Preparation Checklist: What I’m Doing Before Surgery
As I write this, I’m preparing for cervical disc replacement surgery. While surgery can feel overwhelming, I’ve learned through previous health challenges that preparation can make recovery feel much more manageable.
Although my previous surgery was an emergency and I didn’t have the opportunity to prepare ahead of time, that experience taught me how valuable preparation can be. Looking back, I learned that having meals ready, organizing essentials, and setting up a comfortable recovery space beforehand can make the recovery process far less stressful and a little easier.
This time, I’m focusing on preparing my home, gathering recovery essentials, planning meals, and creating systems that will allow me to focus on healing.

If you’re preparing for neck surgery or helping a loved one get ready, here’s my neck surgery preparation checklist and the items I’m using before surgery.
Questions I Asked My Surgeon
Before surgery, I made a list of questions to help understand exactly what to expect before, during and after the procedure. Having these conversations with my doctor helped me feel informed and less anxious about the unknown. Some of the questions I asked included:
- How long will recovery take?
- What restrictions will I have?
- When can I drive again?
- Will I need physical therapy?
- What symptoms are normal?
- What symptoms require a call to the doctor?
- What sleeping positions are recommended?
- How soon can I shower?
- Will I need a neck brace?
Having these answers helped me prepare both mentally and physically for recovery.
Packing My Hospital Bag
Even if you’re only staying one night, having a bag packed ahead of time eliminates last-minute stress. Here’s what was recommended and what I’m bringing:

- Insurance card and ID
- Phone and charger
- My glasses
- Lip balm
- Hair ties
- Comfortable socks
- Loose clothing
- Button-front pajamas
- Book
- Medication list and medications
- Toiletry bag – toothbrush, toothpaste, brush, deodorant, gentle face cleanser, moisturizer
Keeping things simple and comfortable is my priority.
Button-Front Pajamas and Comfortable Clothing
One of the most common recommendations I’ve received is to avoid clothing that requires lifting your arms overhead. I’ve stocked up on:
- Button-front pajamas
- Zip-up sweatshirts
- Lightweight cardigans
- Soft lounge sets
These pieces are comfortable for recovery and practical long after surgery.

Neck Pillows and Comfort Items
Whether riding home from the hospital or resting at home, proper support can make a big difference. I’m planning to have a supportive neck pillow or brace available:
- In the car
- On the couch
- In bed
- While reading
Comfort matters when your body is focused on healing.
Ice Packs and Recovery Essentials
My freezer is currently stocked with reusable gel ice packs. I’m keeping several on hand so one can freeze while another is in use. Recovery essentials I’m gathering include:
- Flexible ice packs
- Pill organizer
- Compression socks
- Lap desk
- Neck pillow
- Large insulated tumbler
These aren’t necessities, but they may help make recovery more comfortable. Find the links here:

Preparing Easy Meals Before Surgery
One thing I don’t want to worry about after surgery is cooking. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been stocking my freezer with simple meals and easy-to-prepare foods.

Freezer Favorites
- Soups – like my favorite Roasted Tomato and Basil Soup
- Turkey Chili
- Pasta sauces
- Breakfast burritos
- Casseroles
Easy Recovery Foods
- Greek yogurt
- Protein shakes
- Overnight Oatmeal
- Fresh fruit
- Rotisserie chicken
- Salad kits
The goal is to make healthy choices as convenient as possible.
Hydration Matters
Staying hydrated plays an important role in recovery. To help myself stay on track, I’m keeping a large insulated tumbler nearby throughout the day. My hydration goals include:
- Drinking water consistently
- Using electrolytes if needed
- Tracking intake during the first week
Planning Entertainment During Recovery
Anyone who knows me knows that patience is not one of my strengths. Since recovery will require extra downtime, I’m making a list of activities to keep myself occupied.
Some ideas include:
- Reading books on my TBR list
- Listening to audiobooks
- Watching favorite shows
- Journaling
- Organizing kids photos for albums
- Planning future travel adventures

Preparing My Recovery Space
Beyond gathering supplies, I’ve also been creating a comfortable place to recover once I’m home. I’ve put together a dedicated recovery area with comfortable bedding, soft lighting, easy-access storage, hydration essentials, books, blankets, and other items that will make recovery easier.

Final Thoughts
Preparing for surgery doesn’t eliminate the uncertainty, but it does help me feel more confident going into the procedure. By asking questions, organizing my home, preparing meals, and gathering recovery essentials, I’m hoping to focus less on logistics and more on healing. If you’re preparing for surgery yourself, remember to give yourself grace, accept help when it’s offered, and take recovery one day at a time.
