If you’ve ever wandered through a French pharmacy, you already know it’s unlike stepping into a drugstore in the United States.

Instead of endless shelves of brightly packaged beauty products, French pharmacies focus on skincare backed by science, dermatologist recommendations, and decades of research. Many of the brands you’ll find have developed cult followings around the world—not because of flashy marketing, but because the products genuinely work.
After living in Germany for four years, I quickly learned that one of the best souvenirs I could bring home wasn’t found in a gift shop—it was found in the Apotheke (pharmacy). Friends would ask me to bring back sunscreen, moisturizers, body oils, and skincare products that were difficult to find in the United States or simply weren’t formulated the same way.

Even today, I continue ordering many of my favorite European products because they’ve become staples in my skincare routine. If you’re wondering which French pharmacy products are actually worth buying, these are the ones I recommend again and again.
Why I’m Qualified to Recommend European Skincare
Unlike many beauty roundups you’ll find online, these aren’t products I’ve simply researched. I lived in Germany for four years and regularly shopped in both German and French pharmacies while traveling throughout Europe. My neighbor happened to actually be the pharmacist in my local village. She was so helpful and taught me all about European brands and which ones to choose and why.

Many of these products have remained part of my skincare routine long after returning to the United States. They’re products I continue purchasing because they consistently perform better than many I’ve tried over the years. Whenever I travel back to Europe—or friends and family visit—I always have a small shopping list waiting.
Throughout this guide, I’ll also share exactly which products I personally use and which ones always make it into my suitcase.
Why European Skincare Is Different
European skincare has earned a reputation for putting skin health first. Many brands spend decades researching ingredients instead of chasing short-term beauty trends. Products often focus on repairing the skin barrier, improving hydration, calming inflammation, and preventing future damage.
One of the biggest differences you’ll notice is sunscreen.

Many European sunscreens contain newer UV filters that aren’t currently approved in the United States, which is why many dermatologists and skincare enthusiasts seek out European formulations. French pharmacies also tend to recommend simple, consistent routines instead of dozens of unnecessary products. For many people, less truly becomes more.
Why French Pharmacies Have Such a Loyal Following
French pharmacies have become legendary among skincare lovers. Walk inside almost any pharmacy in Paris and you’ll see locals stocking up on products they’ve trusted for years.

Instead of expensive luxury counters, you’ll find shelves filled with dermatologist-recommended skincare that focuses on healthy skin rather than covering problems. Many of today’s viral skincare products actually started in French pharmacies long before social media discovered them.
My Favorite French & European Pharmacy Brands
NUXE – A Living Layered Favorite
If I could recommend just one French body product, it would be NUXE Huile Prodigieuse. I originally discovered these while living in Germany and I still buy them years later because there’s nothing like them – they’re incredibly versatile. They leave your skin feeling silky without the greasy finish many body oils leave behind. Made with seven botanical oils, they’re perfect for your body, hair, cuticles, and even dry ends. I especially love using them after showering during the summer when I want healthy-looking, hydrated skin with a subtle glow.
My Favorite NUXE Products:

Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Multi-Purpose Dry Oil – This is my everyday favorite when my skin needs extra moisture without feeling greasy. It absorbs quickly, leaves a soft satin finish, and works beautifully on your body, dry ends, cuticles, and even your face. It’s the one product I always keep stocked.

NUXE Huile Prodigieuse Floral – All-in-One Oil – If you prefer a lighter floral scent, this is my favorite version. It has all the same nourishing benefits as the original with a fresh fragrance that’s perfect for spring and summer.

NUXE Huile Prodigieuse Shimmer Multi-Purpose Dry Oil – I love using this in the summer for evenings out, vacations, or special occasions. I apply a little to my shoulders, collarbone, and legs for a subtle golden glow that catches the light without looking glittery.
Caudalie – A Huge Living Layered Favorite
Founded in the vineyards of Bordeaux, France, Caudalie pioneered the use of grape-derived antioxidants and resveratrol in skincare. The brand blends naturally derived ingredients with research-backed formulations, making it a favorite among those who want effective products without harsh ingredients.
Every night, I use Vinoperfect Glycolic Night Cream, and it has become one of the products I never want to be without. I also rotate in the Vinosource-Hydra Moisturizer or mask when my skin needs extra hydration, and use the Vinoperfect Serum regularly to help brighten my complexion.
For me, Caudalie strikes the perfect balance between luxury and effectiveness, and it’s one of the brands I recommend most often. This is probably my favorite skincare brand in the entire article.

La Roche-Posay – I Always Bring This Home From Europe
Developed around the famous thermal spring water in La Roche-Posay, France, this dermatologist-loved brand has become one of the world’s most trusted skincare companies.
Whenever I travel to Europe—or have someone visiting—I always ask them to bring back La Roche-Posay sunscreen. The European formulas offer some of the most advanced UVA protection available and have become my everyday choice.
I also rely on their products for sensitive skin, especially if my skin becomes red, irritated, or inflamed. The brand is especially well known for sensitive skin, rosacea, eczema, redness, and post-procedure skincare products.

A313 – Another Living Layered Favorite
A313 has developed almost a cult following. Originally found in French pharmacies, this vitamin A ointment contains retinyl esters and has become famous for helping improve skin texture, fine lines, and overall radiance. People genuinely stock up on multiple tubes because it can be difficult to find outside Europe. I use A313 about once a week as part of my nighttime routine. A little goes a long way. It’s incredibly effective—but also very potent.

Vichy
Another French pharmacy icon, Vichy is built around mineral-rich volcanic water sourced from central France. The brand combines hydration with dermatologist-developed active ingredients, making it particularly well suited for dehydrated and aging skin. Their Mineral 89 serum is one of the easiest hydration products to recommend and layers beautifully under moisturizer.

L’Occitane en Provence
Inspired by Provence, L’Occitane celebrates the natural ingredients of southern France, especially shea butter, lavender, almonds, and immortelle flowers. While not a pharmacy-exclusive brand, its luxurious body care and hand creams have earned an international following and are staples in many European homes. Although known for luxurious hand creams, L’Occitane is much more than that. Their shea butter products, almond shower oil, and body creams are favorites throughout Europe.

Avène
Avène’s famous Thermal Spring Water has become a skincare icon. Even actress Lily Collins mentioned carrying it while filming Emily in Paris during a Vogue beauty interview because it’s perfect for refreshing skin throughout the day. If your skin becomes irritated, red, or overheated, this spray is incredibly soothing.

Lancaster – A Living Layered Favorite
I discovered Lancaster sunscreen while vacationing in Greece. We were sailing through the Ionian Islands for a week and in the sun and water all day long. Despite these conditions, our family never burned using this sunscreen. It has remained one of my favorite European sunscreen discoveries ever since.

Weleda
Founded in Switzerland over 100 years ago, Weleda is one of Europe’s oldest natural skincare companies. Their legendary Skin Food has become famous worldwide, but I especially love their hand creams. They’re incredibly nourishing during winter and after gardening. Skin Food has been loved for generations. I especially recommend:

Embryolisse
Originally created for dermatologists in Paris, Embryolisse has become a backstage beauty favorite for makeup artists around the world. Their moisturizers are incredibly versatile and work beautifully under makeup, while their nourishing treatments and gentle exfoliating products make excellent additions to a simple skincare routine. Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré is one of France’s best-known moisturizers. Their night creams and exfoliating products are also excellent.

La Biosthétique
Originally developed in Paris, La Biosthétique combines luxury skincare with professional salon treatments. Although harder to find outside Europe, it’s a wonderful brand if you’re looking for premium skincare and haircare.

My Current European Skincare Routine:
Morning – La Roche-Posay Anthelios Milk SPF 50+ (Sunscreen every single day)
Evening – Caudalie Vinoperfect Glycolic Night Cream, Vinoperfect Serum, Hyalu B5 Eye Cream, Vinosource-Hydra Moisturizer when needed
Weekly – La Roche-Posay Effaclar Cleanser, A313 (once a week), NUXE Dry Oil after showering
What I Always Bring Home From Europe– If I only had room in one suitcase, these are the products I’d buy first. These are the products I’ve repurchased over and over because they’ve earned a permanent place in my skincare routine:
- NUXE Dry Oil
- European La Roche-Posay Sunscreen
- Caudalie Vinoperfect Collection
- A313
- Lancaster Sunscreen
Where to Buy Authentic European Skincare in the U.S. – If you’re looking for the same products sold in European pharmacies, I recommend buying from trusted retailers that import authentic European products. The best places to shop (and many of these retailers ship directly to the United States) are:
- Care to Beauty
- Cocooncenter
- CityPharma
- Easypara
- French Pharmacy
- Shop Apotheke (Germany)
- DocMorris (Germany)
Buying on Amazon – Many of the products I purchase on Amazon are imported European versions. Before ordering, I always check that the seller is reputable and that the listing clearly identifies the product I expect. Because some products are offered by multiple sellers, I recommend verifying the seller and product details if you’re specifically looking for the European formulation. To make shopping easier, I’ve gathered all my favorite European and French pharmacy skincare finds into one convenient list here:
European and French Pharmacy Favorites
This list makes it easier to browse all the product favorites I return to year after year.
A Little European Pharmacy Tip I Learned While Living in Germany
One of my favorite discoveries while living in Germany had nothing to do with a specific skincare product—it was the pharmacies themselves. If you’re shopping at an Apotheke (German pharmacy), don’t be shy about asking if they have skincare samples. It’s very common for pharmacies to give customers complimentary sample sachets of popular brands like NUXE, La Roche-Posay, Avène, Bioderma, Eucerin, Vichy, and Caudalie when you make a purchase. Sometimes they’ll even include several samples without you asking.
Those little packets became one of my favorite travel hacks. Instead of packing full-size bottles or worrying about glass bottles breaking in my suitcase, I tucked away the sample sachets for weekends away, vacations, and flights. They take up almost no space, are TSA-friendly, and let you bring your favorite skincare products without the extra weight.
If you’re looking for a particular product, it’s also worth politely asking if you can purchase additional sample packets. Not every pharmacy will sell them, but some are happy to if they have extras available. It never hurts to ask.
Travel Tip: Before leaving Europe, I always stop by a local pharmacy to pick up a handful of samples for future trips. They’re convenient, lightweight, and a great way to continue using the skincare products I love long after I’ve returned home.
Final Thoughts
European skincare taught me that healthy skin doesn’t have to be complicated. After living in Germany and shopping throughout Europe, I’ve found myself returning to the same trusted products year after year. Rather than constantly chasing the newest trends, I’ve built a routine around brands that consistently deliver results. As I continue discovering new European and French pharmacy favorites, I’ll keep updating this guide with the products I genuinely use and recommend.
If you’re planning a trip to France or Europe, make room in your suitcase – your local pharmacy may end up being one of the best shopping stops of your entire trip.
But whether you’re planning a trip to Europe, ordering from a trusted European pharmacy, or shopping from home, I hope this guide helps you discover products that become lifelong favorites, too.
If you have a favorite French pharmacy product that deserves a spot on this list, I’d love to hear about it! Leave a comment below and let me know what you’ve discovered. I’m always updating this guide with new finds, trusted recommendations, and European beauty favorites worth sharing.
Bon voyage—and happy skincare shopping!
