There’s always that moment when you’re hosting a gathering and someone asks where the drinks are. Then someone else needs ice. Another guest wants water. Someone is looking for a glass, and before you know it, you’ve spent half the party going back and forth between the refrigerator and the kitchen counter. Sound familiar? One of my favorite ways to make entertaining easier is to set up a self-serve drink station before guests arrive. It doesn’t have to be elaborate. A few pretty dispensers or pitchers, a bucket of ice, glasses, and a couple of thoughtfully chosen drinks can make a big difference. And while a drink station is especially nice for Thanksgiving and Christmas, it’s something you can use throughout the year for birthdays, brunches, backyard gatherings, and family celebrations.
For the holidays, I love the idea of serving drinks that look beautiful without being overly sweet or complicated. Think fresh pears and rosemary, jewel-toned pomegranate, seasonal citrus, and a little sparkle. Today I’m sharing how to put together an easy drink station, along with five festive drink recipes that are perfect for serving a crowd.
Why I Love a Self-Serve Drink Station
When I’m hosting, I want guests to feel comfortable helping themselves. A separate drink station makes that easy while keeping everyone from gathering in the kitchen every time they need a refill. It also gives you one less thing to manage while you’re preparing food or catching up with friends. The best part is that you can keep the setup as simple or elaborate as you’d like.
For a smaller gathering, two pretty pitchers and a tray of glasses might be all you need. For Thanksgiving or Christmas, you could create a larger station with infused water, a seasonal punch, and a festive nonalcoholic option. I also love having drinks available that everyone can enjoy, including guests who don’t drink alcohol.
A beautiful drink doesn’t have to contain alcohol to feel special.
How to Set Up a Holiday Drink Station
Before choosing the drinks, think about where your station will go. I like the idea of placing it somewhere guests can easily reach without interrupting the cooking or food preparation. A sideboard, buffet table, kitchen counter, or even a small folding table or bar cart can work beautifully.

If you’re hosting a larger group, keeping the drinks separate from the main food-serving area can help prevent everyone from gathering in the same place.
Start With a Simple Serving Surface
Choose a space large enough to hold your drinks, glasses, ice, and a few small accessories. A serving tray can help organize the smaller items and make everything feel a little more intentional. For a holiday gathering, you can add a linen runner, a few sprigs of greenery, or a small seasonal arrangement. I prefer keeping the decorations minimal so there’s still plenty of room for guests to pour their drinks.
Choose Two or Three Drinks
You don’t need to offer a dozen different beverages. I would start with three options:
- One infused water
- One festive punch
- One sparkling mocktail or another special drink
That gives guests a nice variety without creating too much extra work. If you’re serving alcohol, you can keep wine, beer, or cocktail ingredients in a separate area. For mixed gatherings, clearly label alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks so everyone knows exactly what they’re choosing.
Make Ice Easy to Find
Ice is one of those little details that’s easy to forget until guests start asking for it. A large ice bucket with tongs or a scoop makes the station more convenient. If you’re using a glass or metal bucket, place a small towel underneath to catch condensation.

For longer gatherings, keep extra ice in the freezer and refill the bucket as needed.
Use Glassware That Works for Different Drinks
You don’t need a different glass for every beverage. Simple tumblers or glasses work well for infused water, punch, and most mocktails.

I especially like clear glass because it shows off the colorful fruit and garnishes. For school gatherings or outdoor parties, reusable or disposable cups may be more practical.
Keep the Garnishes Simple
Fresh citrus slices, rosemary, mint, and pomegranate seeds can make ordinary drinks look festive. Rather than preparing a large garnish display, use a few small bowls with ingredients that coordinate with your drinks. Guests can add their own garnishes, and the station stays neat and manageable.

Water Dressed Up for the Holidays
Not every drink at a holiday gathering needs to be sweet, sparkling, or complicated. Sometimes a pitcher of cold, refreshing water is exactly what guests want, especially alongside a rich Thanksgiving or Christmas meal. One of my favorite ways to make ordinary water feel a little more special is to add fresh fruit and herbs. It’s inexpensive, takes just a few minutes to prepare, and looks beautiful in a glass beverage dispenser.

For the holidays, I love the combination of cranberries, lime, and fresh mint. The cranberries add a festive pop of red, while the lime and mint give the water a clean, refreshing flavor.
And there’s no need for syrups, added sugar, or complicated preparation. Just add everything to your pitcher, fill it with chilled water, and let the ingredients do the work.
It’s a simple little detail that makes your drink station feel thoughtful without adding more work to your hosting preparations. Sometimes the simplest drinks are the prettiest.

Festive Holiday Punches Made for a Crowd
A festive holiday punch is one of the easiest ways to serve something special without spending the entire party making individual drinks. I love using familiar seasonal flavors and adding a few simple ingredients that make them feel a little more special.
I recently tried two different punches with my family, and both were a hit! The first combines apple cider, pear nectar, and fresh rosemary for a refreshing fall drink with a little sparkle. The second is a caramel apple punch with just the right amount of cozy sweetness. Both are nonalcoholic, easy to make, and perfect for Thanksgiving or holiday gatherings. You can mix up a large batch in a pretty glass dispenser or make individual glasses and adjust the flavors to your liking.

Harvest Punch

Method
- Pour the apple cider and pear nectar into a large beverage dispenser.
- Add the fresh lemon juice and gently stir to combine.
- Add the sliced apple, pear, rosemary and cinnamon sticks.
- Refrigerate until ready to serve.
- Just before serving, add the chilled gingerale and stir gently,
- Serve over ice in individual glasses. Garnish with additional rosemary or cinnamon sticks if desired.

Making Just One? Try a Single-Glass Harvest Punch
You don’t need to make an entire pitcher to enjoy this festive fall drink! If you’re making one for yourself or want to try it before serving a crowd, here’s an easy single-glass version.
Harvest Punch
Ingredients
- ⅓ cup apple cider
- ¼ cup pear nectar
- 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons + 2 teaspoons chilled ginger ale
- Ice
- Thin apple or pear slice, fresh rosemary, and a cinnamon stick for garnish
Instructions
Fill a glass with ice. Add the apple cider, pear nectar, and lemon juice. Top with ginger ale and stir gently. Garnish with a slice of apple or pear, a sprig of rosemary, and a cinnamon stick.
My Tip: Taste as you go! Add a little more ginger ale for extra sparkle, more pear nectar for sweetness, or another squeeze of lemon if you prefer it a little brighter. I added a sprig of rosemary and a cinnamon stick to my glass, and it was such a simple way to make the drink feel festive.

Caramel Apple Punch
Ingredients
Equipment
Method
- Add apple pie spice to the empty dispenser.
- Pour in apple cider and caramel syrup. Stir well.
- Add in sliced apples, cranberries and rosemary. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Making Just One? Try a Single-Glass Caramel Apple Punch
You don’t need to make an entire batch to enjoy this sweet fall drink! This single-glass version is just as easy and delicious.
Caramel Apple Punch
Ingredients
- ⅔ cup chilled apple cider
- ¼ cup chilled ginger ale
- 1½ teaspoons caramel syrup
- Tiny pinch of apple pie spice
- 1–2 thin apple slices
- 3–4 fresh cranberries
- Ice
Instructions
- Add a tiny pinch of apple pie spice to a glass.
- Pour in the chilled apple cider and stir in the caramel syrup until combined.
- Add ice, apple slices, and fresh cranberries.
- Top with chilled ginger ale and stir gently.
My Tip: Start with a little less caramel syrup and taste before adding more. Some people prefer a sweeter punch, while others may enjoy the apple cider flavor with just a hint of caramel. You can also add more ginger ale for extra sparkle! I added fresh apple slices, cranberries, a cinnamon stick, and a little rosemary for garnish. It’s pretty enough for a holiday drink station but simple enough to make whenever you’re craving something seasonal.
A Little Tip for Serving Holiday Punch – Both of these punches can be prepared in advance by combining the juices and other flavorings and keeping them chilled. Wait until just before serving to add the ginger ale so it stays bubbly. And don’t feel like you have to follow every measurement perfectly. When I tested these, I poured the ingredients directly into our glasses and adjusted them as we tasted. That’s part of the fun! A little more ginger ale, a splash of lemon, or an extra drizzle of caramel can make each drink your own. For larger gatherings, serve the punch in a glass beverage dispenser and keep the ice in a separate bowl so it doesn’t water everything down. Add a few fresh garnishes, set out some glasses, and let everyone help themselves.
How Much Should You Make for a Holiday Gathering?
The amount you’ll need depends on the number of guests, how long the gathering lasts, and what other beverages you’re serving. For a Thanksgiving dinner, I would plan on having plenty of chilled water available along with one seasonal punch or mocktail.
If you’re hosting an open house or longer party, you may want two larger drink options and a separate supply of bottled or filtered water. As a general starting point, plan for approximately two drinks per guest during the first hour and one drink per guest for each additional hour, adjusting for the occasion and serving sizes. You don’t necessarily need to prepare all of it at once.
I prefer keeping extra punch base refrigerated and replenishing the serving pitcher as needed. That way, the drinks stay fresh, the sparkling ingredients don’t go flat, and you aren’t left with a huge amount of punch at the end of the evening.
My Favorite Make-Ahead Drink Station Tips
One of the nicest things about a self-serve drink station is how much can be prepared before guests arrive. The day before your gathering, wash the glassware, choose your serving pieces, and prepare any homemade syrups. You can also wash the fruit and herbs, gather the garnish bowls, and make sure there’s enough room in the refrigerator for the drink ingredients.
A few hours before guests arrive, prepare the non-carbonated punch bases and refrigerate them.
For infused waters, add the fruit a few hours ahead and the fresh herbs closer to serving time. Wait until the last minute to add sparkling water, ginger ale, ginger beer, or prosecco so the drinks stay bubbly.
Keep prepared beverages chilled at 40°F or below until serving, and use ice or another appropriate chilling method during the gathering. Refresh perishable drinks as needed rather than leaving them at room temperature for extended periods. These little steps make everything easier once the party begins.
Shop My Holiday Drink Station Essentials
You don’t need a lot of specialty equipment to create a beautiful drink station. I would focus on a few versatile pieces that work for different occasions throughout the year. A large glass beverage dispenser or pretty pitcher, an insulated ice bucket, simple glassware, and a serving tray are all useful starting points. Small glass bottles for homemade syrups can also be a nice addition if you enjoy making coffee drinks, mocktails, or cocktails at home.
I’ve gathered some of my favorite entertaining essentials in my storefront, including drink dispensers, glassware, serving trays, and other practical hosting pieces.
