Spring Break in California That Didn’t go as Planned

There’s something about going back to Southern California that always feels like stepping into a different version of life — one that’s familiar, full, and layered with memories.
This trip was meant to be about family, sunshine, and all our favorite places.
And it was… just not exactly how we pictured it.
Day One: A Perfect Start
We started the trip the way we always hope to — easy and happy.
We met up with a friend in Huntington Beach and started the day off with Lunch at Fred’s Mexican Cafe, it was a must (it always is), then some shopping and walking around Main Street. It felt like the perfect SoCal day — relaxed, warm, and full of that beach energy you can’t quite recreate anywhere else, and we stayed long enough to catch the classic car show — rows of polished cars, music playing, and that nostalgic California vibe.
That night, we met up with friends and family for mini golf. It was loud, fun, and full of laughs — until it wasn’t.
One of the boys started feeling sick, and just like that, we were heading home early.
When Plans Start to Shift
The next day, we tried to reset. Dinner with family, slower pace, hoping it was just a one-off.
But then another one got sick.
That’s the thing about travel with kids — it can change in an instant.
Making the Most of It Anyway
We weren’t going to let it take the whole trip. When One of the kids was feeling better, we made it to Santa Monica Pier, where we rode the roller coaster, and for a moment, everything felt normal again.
We rented bikes and rode from Santa Monica to Venice Beach and then started toward Malibu — ocean on one side, that endless California coastline on the other.
Lunch was simple and nostalgic — Hot Dog on a Stick — one of those places that just feels like childhood.
In Between the Chaos
The rest of the trip became a mix of moments — some planned, some adjusted.
- Indoor kart racing for one of the boys
- Watching my brother’s softball game
- Family dinners and time together
And, of course, making sure we hit all the food spots that feel like home:
- Panda Inn
- In-N-Out
Because some traditions don’t get skipped — even when everything else shifts.
Easter, Family, and Slowing Down
We squeezed in an Easter egg hunt with the kids and their cousin — one of those simple moments that ends up meaning the most.
Not everything has to be big to be memorable.
The Ending We Didn’t Expect
By the last day, it was my turn.
I got sick just in time for our flight home.
A delayed red-eye, feeling completely wiped, and just trying to get everyone home.
Not exactly the ending we planned.
The Layered Truth About Travel
This trip wasn’t perfect.
It wasn’t the version you picture when you plan it.
But it was real.
It was family, friends, showing up anyway, adjusting, and finding moments in between the chaos.
And there’s something powerful about that.
Because you realize:
You’re not starting over — you’re building layers.
Even when the trip doesn’t go as planned.
