Come for the Garden, Stay for Everything Else

South Street Gardens in Morristown, NJ: A Year-Round Destination for Home, Garden, Flowers & Events

There are garden centers you visit because you need a plant, and then there are places you find yourself wandering through long after you’ve forgotten what you originally came for.

South Street Gardens in Morristown, New Jersey, is definitely the second kind. I first discovered South Street gardens this spring, when everything was coming back to life and the nursery was filled with fresh plants, flowers and garden inspiration. But what really caught my attention was everything beyond the nursery — a beautifully styled home and gift store, a full-service flower shop, creative workshops, community events, and displays that change as the seasons do.

And that may be what I like most about South Street Gardens: there’s always a reason to come back.

Spring brings fresh blooms and new garden inspiration. Summer fills the nursery with another completely different mix of color and plants. Fall is now filled with gorgeous richer colors, seasonal plants, grasses, gourds and pumpkins – everything which makes this time of year so much fun. Eventually, the garden center will move toward winter greenery, twinkling lights, and holiday décor.

South Street Gardens feels less like a traditional garden center and more like a year-round destination for anyone who loves home, garden, flowers, and finding a little inspiration along the way.

A Garden Center That Changes With the Seasons

The plants are naturally a big part of the experience. Throughout the year, South Street Gardens carries a changing selection of annuals, perennials, flowering plants, shrubs, trees, houseplants, planters, pottery, and seasonal garden products. But what makes walking through the nursery especially enjoyable is the way everything is displayed.

Rather than rows and rows of plants with little context, you’ll find combinations of different heights, textures, foliage, and flowers layered together throughout the property. It makes it much easier to imagine what you could recreate at home.

Sometimes I know exactly what I’m looking for when I walk into a garden center. Other times, I need to see things together before I know what I want — and South Street Gardens is particularly good for that kind of inspiration.

Step Inside the Greenhouses

Don’t miss the greenhouses while you’re wandering through South Street Gardens. They’re filled with a beautiful mix of lush greenery, houseplants, ferns, tropical plants, flowering varieties, and smaller potted plants tucked into layered displays.

I especially liked how the plants are mixed with baskets, pottery, wood pieces, and other natural textures, so even the greenhouse feels styled rather than simply stocked.

It’s another area where you can easily lose track of time. You may go in looking for one plant and come out with three — or at the very least, a few new ideas for bringing more greenery indoors.

The greenhouse selection changes with the seasons too, which makes it another part of South Street Gardens worth revisiting throughout the year.

Back for Fall at South Street Gardens

After discovering South Street Gardens in the spring, I knew I wanted to come back and see how it changed with the seasons. Fall felt like the perfect excuse to return — and the nursery looked completely different from my first visit.

The fresh spring displays had been replaced with mums, asters, ornamental grasses, colorful foliage plants, ornamental kale, pumpkins, gourds, and all of those wonderful textures that make fall gardens and containers so beautiful.

One of my favorite areas was the open greenhouse filled with pumpkins and gourds.

Traditional orange pumpkins were mixed with white pumpkins and all sorts of wonderfully unusual gourds — bumpy, twisted, striped, and slightly imperfect. Mixed with mums, grasses, and other seasonal plants, the whole space felt abundant rather than overly styled.

If you’re working on your own garden as the season changes, you could easily come here looking for one plant and leave mentally redesigning your entire front porch!

Then the Seasons Change Again

The fun part is that fall isn’t the end of the story. As one season winds down, South Street Gardens begins transforming for the next.

When winter arrives, the nursery takes on an entirely different look with Christmas trees, fresh evergreens, wreaths, winter greenery, seasonal flowers, and holiday displays. String lights and evergreens give the outdoor space an almost little Christmas village feeling, while inside, the Home & Gift Store transitions into holiday mode as well.

That’s why I wouldn’t think of South Street Gardens as someplace you visit once a year.

You could come in September and return in December and feel like you’re visiting somewhere completely different. Then spring arrives and everything changes again.

It truly is a garden center for every season.

Don’t Skip the Home & Gift Store

The Home & Gift Store was probably the biggest surprise during my first visit.

It feels more like a beautifully curated home boutique than the gift section you might expect to find attached to a nursery.

There are styled tables layered with decorative vessels, pottery, glassware, candles, baskets, textiles, fresh and dried botanicals, seasonal accents, and gift-able finds. And everything is displayed beautifully. Instead of simply placing merchandise on shelves, the store shows you how different pieces can work together.

I especially loved the mix of natural materials — wood, pottery, woven textures, greenery, florals, and glass — because it gives the space that collected-over-time feeling I’m always drawn to.

The merchandise changes along with the season, too. Fall brings warmer colors, dried botanicals, and autumn accents. Winter introduces greenery, ornaments, holiday décor, and gifts. Then spring and summer bring another completely different mix. It’s one of those stores where you may go in looking for a hostess gift and leave with decorating ideas for your own house.

Grab Something to Eat While You’re There

South Street Gardens is also a place where you can slow down and stay awhile. During my visit, Cedar & Salt, an on-site food truck, was serving food and drinks right in the middle of the gardens.

There’s outdoor seating nearby, so you can grab something to eat, sit among the plants and seasonal displays, and make your visit feel more like an afternoon outing than a quick trip to the garden center.

It’s one more little detail that makes South Street Gardens feel like a destination rather than simply a place to shop for plants.

Flowers for Every Season

South Street Gardens also has a full-service floral shop, South Street Floral. The floral studio creates arrangements for everyday occasions as well as weddings, celebrations, and special events.

Because the flowers and greenery naturally change throughout the year, it becomes another seasonal part of the South Street Gardens experience. Spring flowers, summer blooms, richer fall arrangements, and winter greenery each bring something different.

Workshops, Classes & Something New to Try

South Street Gardens has also become a place to do something, not just shop. Throughout the year, they offer a rotating schedule of workshops and creative experiences.

Depending on the season, you might find floral or gardening workshops along with classes in areas such as calligraphy, watercolor, handcrafts, seasonal projects, wellness, and other creative activities. I love this part because it turns a visit into something you could easily plan with a friend. Take a workshop, walk through the nursery afterward, browse the Home & Gift Store, and see what’s new for the season.

Because the schedule changes regularly, it makes much more sense to check the current calendar than to plan around a permanent list of classes. See what’s coming up on the schedule at South Street Gardens:

Seasonal Events Give You Another Reason to Visit

South Street Gardens also hosts events and community gatherings throughout the year.

Markets, seasonal events, special activities, and other experiences are added to the calendar as the year changes. The property can also host smaller private gatherings such as celebrations, showers, dinners, workshops, and other special events.

With the gardens, greenery, flowers, and beautifully styled spaces, it’s easy to imagine how pretty an intimate event here could be.

More Than a Place to Buy Plants

What I liked most about South Street Gardens is that you don’t really need a particular reason to go. You can come because you need plants for your garden. You can look for something new for your porch. You can pick up fresh flowers. You can browse home décor and gifts. You can take a workshop with a friend. You can visit during the holidays. Or you can simply walk around and see what inspires you.

And because the plants, displays, merchandise, flowers, and events continually change, one visit doesn’t really show you everything. That may be the best reason to return.
